How can I get involved with ILGISA?
Members are encouraged to actively participate on any of the Association Committees. ILGISA functions as a result of member participation. If you are interested in joining a committee, feel free to contact one of the Board members on that committee to ask questions and express your interest. We are always looking for new ideas!
What is the Outstanding Student Award?
The Outstanding Student Award is presented to an undergraduate student of any major who has included GIS in their course of study, and has demonstrated exemplary proficiency and understanding of GIS, potential contribution to the GIS Community, and general success in school. No more than five such awards are presented each year.
What is the Service Award?
The Service Award is presented to an individual or organization which has provided exemplary professional service or support to the GIS community. No more than three such awards are presented each year.
What is the Dahlberg Award?
The Dahlberg Distinguished Achievement Award is presented to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the development and advancement of geographic information systems. Only one such award is made each year; it is possible that no award is presented in a given year.
What is the Hilton Award? The Hilton Distinguished Collaboration Award is presented to an individual who has provided extraordinary service to the GIS community in the advancement of coordination between GIS professionals. The Honors committee may select a recipient for the Hilton Distinguished Collaboration Award, as and when they deem appropriate. This award is presented to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the promotion of cooperation within our community and with the people we serve. Only one such award is made each year; it is possible that no award is presented in a given year.
What are the responsibilities of a member of the Board of Directors?
Members of the Board of Directors are charged with setting the direction and managing the affairs of the organization. Historically, the Board has met monthly either in person at conferences or through conference telephone calls. Board members are expected to participate in all Board meetings and play an active role in the management of the affairs of the organization. ILGISA provides no financial compensation, so Board Members must provide support personally or through their employer. Members of the Board should have had an active involvement in ILGISA through participation in meetings and committee work.
Can I nominate myself for the Board of Directors?
Individuals may nominate themselves or someone else for one of these positions.
How can I get nominated for the Board of Directors?
ILGISA annually requests nominations for open Board positions in the late Spring of each year. All nominations are forwarded to the Governance Committee who will select from those names received to propose a slate of candidates. The endorsed candidates’ names and bio will be placed on the ballot, which will be emailed to the membership so that everyone will have the ballot at least 30 days before our Annual Conference each fall.
Who is eligible to serve on the ILGISA Board of Directors?
Any member is eligible to serve on the Board of Directors. Private sector members are eligible, but only 30% of directors can be from the private sector at any given time.
Is there a cost to posting my job opening on the ILGISA Site?
There is no cost to post a job opening in the Job Center for ILGISA Members. There is a nominal fee of $100 for non-member postings.
Do I need to be a member of ILGISA to post my job opening?
No, you do not need to be a member. Non-members can post to the Job Center for a nominal fee of $100.

What are the benefits to becoming a member of ILGISA?
Each member receives access to the members’ only section of the website, a copy of the directory, newsletters, and all ILGISA mailings. Special member rates are available for all conferences and meetings provided the individual’s membership status is in good standing and paid for the current year.
