Time to go inside? Lessons learned from implementing Indoor GIS

Presented by: Steve Bowley, Campus Facilities Technical Manager at Cloudpoint Geospatial

Steve is the Campus Facilities Technical Manager at Cloudpoint Geospatial. His focus is on delivering Indoor GIS solutions for higher education campuses and K-12 school districts. Steve has been a GIS professional for over 20 years, working for federal and commercial clients in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry, and specializes in CAD to GIS integration, data management and automation.

Presentation Abstract: Indoor mapping is rapidly evolving as a critical component of GIS, driven by the integration of connected devices, sensors, and centralized floorplans that support digital twins. As buildings become smarter and indoor navigation capabilities expand through advancements in Indoor Positioning Systems (IPS), GIS professionals have a unique opportunity to enhance their work by incorporating building data into spatial analysis workflows. This presentation will explore how we can leverage GIS and CAD data to improve space management, asset management, and public safety. Drawing on real-world experience with the implementation of the Esri ArcGIS Indoors solution, we will share valuable insights and lessons learned in addressing these challenges, and demonstrate how GIS software can be harnessed to support smarter, more efficient indoor environments.
