We are seeking an individual to develop and implement cartographic standards and procedures for the geologic mapping programs of the ISGS. Conduct research into framework base data necessary for geologic mapping applications. Coordinate the formal ISGS review of geologic maps for scientific and cartographic content and standards.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in geology or related discipline with 5 years related industry or research experience. Master’s degree is preferred. Knowledge of earth science and principles of cartography. Knowledge of GIS software (preferably ArcGIS/ESRI) and graphics (preferably Adobe Design Suite) software and database, geospatial, and graphic data and file formats.

BASIC FUNCTION
The GIS Technician provides Geographical Information System (GIS) technical support and assistance to the District with the implementation, design, support of the District’s geographical information database, and to prepare maps and drawings for District Staff and Departments.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Create maps and data for District Staff, Departments, and special projects as assigned.

Assist the Planning and GIS Coordinator with implementation and maintenance of the District’s GIS including mapping applications.

Assists in the creation and maintenance of the District’s GIS layers in Multiuser Geodatabase.

Assist Public Affairs Department with Geocaching permit review.

Geocode addresses for school programs and other projects as needed.

Digitize and verify legal descriptions and surveys using GIS COGO tools for all District properties as needed.

Create metadata for organization of District’s GIS layers.

Fill GIS data requests from other agencies and organizations.

Perform data acquisition, collection, and verification tasks.

Perform research on GIS related products, trends, and projects.

Attend conferences and seminars relevant to the District’s use of GIS.

Train end-users of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and various GIS software applications.

Perform GPS post differential correction and creates data dictionaries for staff GPS data collection.

Participate as a team member on GIS Management Team and District-wide teams as assigned.

Perform other functions as assigned or required.

Must possess and maintain a current and valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

GIS Technician (Barrington Area Council of Governments)

The GIS Technician is a part-time position responsible for: 1) Maintenance and updates to the existing Barrington Area Geographic Information System (BAGIS); 2) Support for the Barrington Area Council of Government’s (BACOG) groundwater research programs including coordination of water quality testing and materials development; 3) GIS support to the BACOG office; 4) GIS services to local government members of BACOG. The GIS Technician reports directly to the Executive Director of BACOG.
The GIS Technician is a position requiring strong skill sets in GIS. The position requires strong organizational skills, independent goal-setting, creativity and interest in local government matters. The groundwater program responsibilities require the Technician to have strong communication, problem-solving, volunteer coordination and public education-oriented skills.
The software in use is ArcView 10, Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, and Microsoft Word, Access, Power Point, and Excel. Additional skills in information services including basic coding, computer maintenance, and software installation experience are a plus.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES
BAGIS:
BACOG updates and maintains the Barrington Area GIS (BAGIS) data for the regional area which includes parts of four counties. The Technician compiles and updates data from various sources. Data comes in various formats, and conversion skills are helpful. Using BAGIS, the Technician creates maps for meetings, provides GIS expertise and performs miscellaneous functions.
Groundwater:
The Technician will become familiar with products that have been previously developed and learn to operate existing models in ArcScene; limited training will be provided. Technician will use database design and management skills to input regularly-acquired new water data.
The Technician may assist with presentations to groups and write groundwater-related press releases, educational materials and brochures. Technician will perform general cartography and map production and will communicate regularly with staff, officials and the public.
General:
The Technician may meet with staff and officials in order to provide maps or related planning products, may conduct research, and may provide grant proposal support. May help assess equipment and software needs of the office and provide technical support to BACOG staff on an as-needed basis.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in Geography, or other closely related field with strong GIS coursework. A background or coursework in natural sciences, especially environmental science, geology or hydrogeology, database/computer science, urban planning or graphic design is desirable. Possession of a valid State Driver’s License.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
Knowledge of and experience with ArcGIS Desktop, Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, working knowledge of all Windows desktop systems, and Publisher 2007. Experience with Modelbuilder/Python and basic html is highly desirable.
Skills in cartography and high quality map design.
Skills in managing and coordinating activities, schedules and priorities and projects towards multiple successful outcomes independently.
Skills in communicating effectively, in both technical and non-technical terms, and in preparing written and oral reports; interpersonal skills sufficient to exchange information and to give and receive work direction in a pleasant and professional manner.
HOURS AND COMPENSATION
The GIS Technician position is a permanent part-time position at 19 hours per week.
BACOG’s office hours are Monday through Thursday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Scheduled hours for the GIS Technician are flexible within the listed business hours. Attendance at limited evening committee and board meetings is required and will be compensated.
The BACOG office will relocate to 112 Algonquin Road, Barrington Hills, as of July 1st.
Compensation for the GIS Technician position is $13-15 per hour depending on qualifications. No benefits. No relocation assistance. No sponsorship of work visas.

The Position
Reporting to and under the guidance of the Head of the Map Department and in collaboration with staff from the Library Cataloging and Metadata Department, manages all of the GIS aspects of the Map Department’s metadata and cataloging operations. These operations, which generally utilize the Maps2MARC process, focus primarily on topographic map series and nautical charts, but may expand to include Sanborn Fire Insurance maps, highway maps, GIS data, and raster digital files created from paper-based maps held by the Department.
Principal Responsibilities
1. Provides GIS support for projects creating descriptive records for the Map Department’s paper-based maps and charts.
2. Manages, plans, and organizes GIS project workflow and reports progress made on different phases of the project for each map series.
3. Creates GIS footprint indexes for map series with ArcGIS software by individual sheet or in bulk with automated grid methods.
4. Builds GIS table templates with catalog librarians to allow the catalogers to record particular metadata for individual maps within a series.
5. Using ArcGIS software, processes map series information.
6. Collaborates with staff to convert GIS map footprint indexes to MARC records or to convert MARC records to GIS footprints.
7. Generates reports for map series for inventory and labeling of map folders.
8. Supervises student employees who assist in creating map footprint indexes and other related tasks.
9. Works on site at assigned Libraries.
10. May perform other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
Master’s degree with training or specialty in GIS. 1 year GIS experience with geospatial data/ cartographic materials or GIS project management involving development of metadata for a collection of objects. For appointment to the rank of Librarian 1, a Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program for library and information science is required.
Required Skills & Abilities
1. Demonstrated familiarity with ArcGIS 10 or 10.1 GIS desktop and Microsoft Excel software. Some familiarity with the MARC metadata format, and HTML. High degree of computer literacy.
2. Familiarity with topographic and nautical series maps, projections, and coordinate systems.
3. Excellent oral, written, and graphic communication skills.
4. Ability to train others in fundamental GIS and metadata collection skills.
5. Excellent management, communication, and coordination skills with an ability to systematically and logically solve problems and implement measures to ensure quality control of metadata.

Research Associate or Faculty Research Associate - Remote Sensing Specialist (University of Maryland)

POSITION SUMMARY/PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Department of Geographical Sciences at the University of Maryland is seeking a remote
sensing specialist with strong programming skills and a background in remote sensing of
land cover and vegetation dynamics. The focus of this position is on
developing/improving algorithms to monitor and detect wetland changes combining
multiple types of remotely sensed data (e.g., Landsat time series data/SAR/LiDAR) at
various spatial and temporal scales. The candidate will also synthesize a number of
geospatial and field data to calibrate/validate the map products, help quantify the capacity
of wetlands to improve water quality, and assess the vulnerability, impact, and adaptation
(VIA) of wetlands under future climate change, land cover change, and other
adaptation/mitigation scenarios. This research is in direct response to a call for
improved information to support decision making at the local, state, and regional levels
and the candidate will interact with environmental managers within the Chesapeake Bay
Watershed. We specifically seek candidates with the ability to: 1) manage large
geospatial datasets, 2) process and integrate regional scale remotely sensed datasets, 3)
statistically assess various mapping and modeling outputs, facilitate interactions between
research collaborators to meet project goals, and 4) write and publish peer-reviewed

SCOPE OF WORK: Acts as the City of Decatur’s digital map database administrator, with responsibility for version control, maintenance, and enhancement of Geographic Information System (GIS) datasets. Provides technical support to users in the maintenance, development and operation of the City’s multi-department GIS; assists in assembling and evaluating technical information specific to departmental information; creates, maintains, and conducts analyses on a variety of spatial and tabular databases; leads/assists users in the production of specialized mapping products, and performs related responsibilities as required. The administrator will assist a GIS application developer in the effort to further integrate GIS functionality into web-enabled tools. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: The ideal candidate will be skilled in developing geographic data; cartography; GPS acquisition, and converting graphic and tabular data into GIS data structures. The position requires knowledge of map projections, coordinate systems, and rectification processes, along with proven skills in communicating spatial information effectively. Proficiency in developing automation processes via common scripting languages such as Python, as well as experience with web-enabled GIS tools and interfaces, is preferred. Candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
QUALIFICATIONS: Requires a Bachelor's degree in Geography, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field; 1 year experience in the development of GIS geodatabases; or an equivalent combination of training and experience, preference for experience. Proficiency designing and administering ArcSDE (DB2) geodatabases and creating automation tasks through scripts preferred.
