ILGISA list serv guidelines
What is a
Listserv?
A list serve is an e-mail discussion
group that permits you to:
- network with colleagues
- quickly resolve problems and seek
solutions
- seek advice or answers and get
responses quickly
- actively participate in discussions
or simply monitor news or developments
- stay involved with the association
How
does a listserv discussion group work?
Think of it as a large
bulletin board. You pin up a message for your colleagues to read
and/or respond to. Messages are posted in response to yours, and
so on. Instead of paper scraps and puch pins, we use e-mail over
the Internet. Participation is not limited to ILGISA members.
How
do I sign up?
Click on the link below and scroll down to the "subscribing to ILGISA" area to enter your email address and chosen password. You will receive an email back asking you to click on a link to confirm your subscription to the listserv. That's all there is to it!

Listserv Use Guidelines
When
posting a message on the ILGISA list serv, subscribing members should
keep in mind the following general guidelines:
- If you have an alias email that was supplied to you, please do not utilize that alias to subscribe, use your full email address because some listserv hosts can be sensitive to alias emails and cause you to receive errors.
- The purpose of this valuable resource is to provide an
open forum for the posting of announcements and discussion of
news, ideas, and information relating to GIS.
- Each message should be suitable for this site and constructive
as to content.
- Care should be given to the composition of each message
to ensure that the announcement/request will be clearly understood
by the subscribing members.
- Always remember that your responses to questions or inquiries
are posted to all subscribers on the ListServ. Therefore you should
respond in a professional, business like manner.
- The exchange of jokes, chain letters, sports pools or
other gambling activities, as well as uncomplimentary or unproductive
information regarding elected officials, employees, colleagues,
etc., is considered an inappropriate use of this ListServ.
-
VERY IMPORTANT: remember
to unsubscribe from the ListServ before enabling the automatic
response feature on your email. Otherwise you risk every ListServ
subscriber receiving hundreds of copies of your automatic
response.
-
The ListServ cannot distribute messages
that are longer than 40,000 characters, including attachments.
It is best to keep messages as short as possible and to break
up long attachments and transmit them separately.
