INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

GIS Internships, Job Shadowing, and Mentors Wanted

I am seeking involvement for those GIS professionals and organizations who are interested in supporting undergraduate GIS students in job shadowing experiences, internships, and mentoring relationships. Preference is for organizations and individuals within a 30-mile radius of the Chicago area, but other areas are welcome as well.

Job shadowing involves having a student visit your organization for a few hours, a half day, or an entire day, introduces them to your organization and allows them to observe what it is that a GIS professional does on a daily basis. This involves no stipend and very little in terms of time commitment from you or your organization.

GIS internships are being sought by undergraduate GIS students who have all completed introductory GIS and programming coursework, as well as being members of professional organizations and have attended professional conferences. Most are sophomores and juniors and are seeking summer positions in/around the Chicago Metro area. Most students seek paid internships, but those with modest stipends are also desired.

Lastly, there are opportunities for those to serve as mentors for undergraduate students while they are completing their education and internships. More details on the Elmhurst College Mentoring Program here:

I am currently a graduate student in the University of Illinois at Chicago's GIS certificate program in Geospatial Analysis and Visualization.  I am pursuing UIC's GIS certificate to update the skills I first acquired in my graduate study at the University of Pittsburgh where I earned a Masters in Urban and Regional Planning and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering/Environmental Systems Engineering.
After my graduate education at Pitt my career evolved into the field of IT management. Last year I made the decision to return to the field that first captured my imagination in graduate school, but which, at the time, offered limited employment opportunities. One of my next steps is to find an internship position, paid or unpaid, halftime to full time, in the Chicago metropolitan area as a way to gain work experience in the GIS / planning field.

Regarding my technical qualifications, this past fall I completed two of three courses that are required for the certificate at UIC. One of the two courses was an in depth study of ArcGIS 9.3.1 with Max Dieber and Nina Savar.  This spring I will complete the certificate with the intermediate course in GIS (also being taught by Nina Savar) which will cover network analysis, raster analysis, relational database models for data storage, spatial statistics, and database editing.

I also have scientific programming experience in FORTRAN, database programming experience with Access, FoxPro and dBase and web programming experience with Javascript.  I am currently learning to program in ArcObjects with Visual Basic.  I have considerable experience with multivariate statistics and am comfortable with SPSS.  I have extensive experience using MS Office products including Word, Excel, Access, Project and Visio.

In addition to my current study at UIC, my prior graduate work at Pitt included development of population forecasting models and projects involving statistical and spatial analysis of socio-demographic data.  My dissertation was a forecast of automobile ownership and use for the US based on household lifestyle characteristics.

My graduate study at Pitt was followed by work at a consulting firm doing policy analysis for State and federal agencies and a position as the head of the research and data bureau at the Allegheny County Planning Department in Pittsburgh, PA.  I also spent six years running a small software development company that built specialized database applications for small business.  That work was followed by positions in IT management in higher education during which time I also taught courses in statistics and computer information systems.

If you would be interested in pursuing this opportunity further, please contact me via phone or email as indicated above.
